Built with Kapunda marble and West Island granite, Parliament House, Adelaide was constructed in stages over 65 years. It is one of the grandest parliamentary buildings in Australia.
The West Wing was built between 1874 and 1889 at a cost of £165,404. However, the outbreak of the Great War delayed construction of the East Wing which was completed in 1939 and cost £241,887.
The completed Parliament House was formally opened by the Governor-General of Australia (and former South Australian Governor) Lord Gowrie on 5 June 1939.
